Sister Margaret Mary Rankin, OP of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on September 16, 2009 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY.
Born in New York City on October 29, 1914, Edith was the daughter of John and Robina Moir Rankin. Edith entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1944, and became known as Sister Margaret Mary, professing her first vows in 1946 and her final vows in 1951.
Sister Margaret Mary earned a BS in Education from St. John’s University, Queens, NY in 1962 and an MS in Education from City College, New York, NY in 1975.
During her professional life, Sister Margaret Mary served in the Archdiocese of New York and Dioceses of Brooklyn, Rockville Center and Wilmington, DE. From 1946–54 she worked in child care at Cardinal McCloskey, White Plains, NY; St. Catherine of Siena. Wilmington, DE and St. Agnes Home, Sparkill, NY. From 1954-56 she taught religious education in Holy Family Parish, Hicksville, NY. Sr. Margaret Mary taught elementary school at St. Edmund, Brooklyn, NY (1956-59); Mary Queen of Heaven, Brooklyn, NY (1959-62); St. Anthony, Bronx, NY (1962-66); St. Helena, Bronx, NY (1966-95). In 1995 Sister Margaret Mary retired from teaching but continued to volunteer in St. Helena School and Parish until 2005 when she took up residence in Siena Hall Infirmary in Sparkill.
Sr. Margaret Mary was faithful to the Gospel and lived her life in the joy of being of service to others. She was committed to her life as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill and was grateful to God for calling her to religious life. We are grateful for her faithfulness for 65 years and we ask the Lord give her eternal rest in the kingdom prepared for those who believe.
