Sister Virginia Marie Huels, OP of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on October 20, 2009 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY.
Born in St. Louis, MO on February 6, 1926, Virginia was the daughter of Leo and Emma Rowekamp Huels. Virginia entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1943, and became known as Sister Virginia Marie, professing her first vows in 1945 and her final vows in 1951.
Sister Virginia Marie earned a BA in Education from Webster College, Missouri in 1953.
During her professional life, Sister Virginia Marie served in the Archdiocese of New York and St. Louis as an elementary school teacher. She ministered in NY at St. Catherine of Siena (1945-47) and St. Rita (1951-52); and in St. Louis at Epiphany (1947-48); St. James (1949-50 & 1965-68); St. Mark (1950-51); Little Flower (1952-53); Holy Redeemer (1953-65 & 1972-73). From 1973-1997 Sr Virginia Marie served as a Receptionist and/or Clerical Assistant at various places in St. Louis: St. Mark HS, St. John Baptist Library, St. Louis University, Guardian Angel Settlement, SS Catholic Community Services, Senior Home Security and Gardenville Community Center. She retired in 1997 and offered local community service until she took up residence in Siena Hall Infirmary in 2003 in Sparkill, NY.
Sr. Virginia Marie was faithful to the Gospel and lived her life in the joy of being of service to others. She was grateful for her life of sixty-six years as a Sparkill Dominican and had a faithful devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary. We are grateful for her faithfulness and ask the Lord to bring her home and give her peace in the eternal kingdom.
