Sister Joseph Marie Cooney, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on February 5, 2009 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY.

Born in Providence, RI, November 29, 1908, Marguerite Cooney was the daughter of James and Maria McIntyre Cooney.  She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill in 1930 and became known as Sister Joseph Marie, professing her first vows in 1931 and final vows in 1937.

Sister Joseph Marie earned a BA in English from Manhattan College in 1947.

During her professional life, Sister Joseph Marie taught elementary school from 1931 - 1967 in the Archdiocese of New York and in the Diocese of Brooklyn.  She taught at St. Edmund, Brooklyn, NY (1931-34); Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Richmond Hill, NY (1934-36); St. Brendan, Bronx, NY (1936-40); St. John Chrysostom, Bronx, NY (1940-42) and St. Teresa, Woodside, NY (1942-67).   For eleven years she was the bookstore manager at the St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY and for sixteen years she was a staff member in the Finance Office at Dominican Convent.  She took up residence in Siena Hall Infirmary 1982.

Sister Joseph Marie will be remembered for her commitment to education and to the students whose lives she has touched throughout her forty-seven years in the educational field.  She was gentle and kind and enjoyed her life of one hundred years.  We are grateful for the gift of her life and for seventy-nine years of faithful service as a Dominican Sister.  May she enjoy the rewards of eternal life which God has promised to those who are faithful.  Amen.
